Stockholm has the largest urban rail transit system in Northern Europe. Transdev Sverige AB operates more than 1,600 buses and is committed to coordinating and synchronizing bus services with the rail transit system to create a seamless urban transportation system.
As demand for real-time data surged, Transdev Sverige AB faced the challenge of expanding its existing infrastructure. To meet this challenge, Transdev partnered with Moxa.
By integrating Moxa's industrial computers and GHOST Labs' IIoT platform, Transdev was able to equip its buses with a powerful data acquisition and processing system.
Process data securely and reliably: monitor and analyze vehicle information in real time
Significantly improve the passenger experience : improve the operational efficiency of the public transportation system and make urban mobility more green and environmentally friendly
Case Overview
Connecting the largest
Nodes of urban transportation network
Sustainable mobility enables flexible commuting
Transdev is a global public transport operator headquartered in France, committed to providing safe, reliable and environmentally sustainable transport solutions around the world.

△ Stockholm Integrated Transportation: Northern Europe's largest urban rail transit system and efficient bus system
Coordinate and synchronize bus and rail systems to achieve seamless urban mobility
Stockholm has the largest urban rail transit system in Northern Europe. Commuter ferries and buses complement this extensive rail transit system to form a seamless, integrated urban transportation network.
Stockholm's public transport system has 480 routes and 5,000 stops -
- The best solution: connecting urban trunk lines, suburban trunk lines, main air routes, community special lines and night bus routes
- Coordinate with the rail transit system: Avoid route overlap as much as possible to ensure efficient and flexible operations and smooth travel experience
Transdev Sverige AB, a large Swedish public transport operator, is part of the Transdev Group, which works with governments and transport alliances to provide more convenient public transport services. With more than 1,600 buses, Transdev is committed to improving operational efficiency by synchronizing real-time data, optimizing routes and improving the overall passenger experience .
Technical Challenges
- Scaling infrastructure to handle data overload
- Processing the growing volume of transit and passenger data
Buses carry not only passengers, but also data, so traffic jams and other factors must be taken into account. As soon as the doors close, the number of passengers is transmitted in real time.
Anders Bergstrom, Chief Architect at Transdev Sverige AB, explains that buses in Greater Stockholm transmit data every second. Transdev has developed a data management and information processing system that integrates information from design to real-time operation.
As the volume of real-time data surged, the existing infrastructure was overwhelmed. "We couldn't scale our existing solution," said Adam Fal, CIO of Transdev Sverige AB. To handle the increasing volume of real-time data and address data overload, Transdev needed to build a scalable infrastructure.

△ As the amount of real-time data collected after the system upgrade surges, it becomes more challenging to process data with the existing infrastructure
Solution
Adapting to the trend of real-time data
Build a reliable vehicle data acquisition and processing system
In order to collect and process data from multiple sources and analyze real-time information while the buses are driving, Transdev needs a reliable and powerful on-board computer.
Transdev has partnered with CatAB, Moxa's official agent in the Stockholm area, which has been supplying first-class industrial data communication boards and devices since 1988.
- Moxa and CatAB work together to provide Transdev with full support from pre-configuration, solution design to final deployment
- Moxa's UC8220 computer is designed for embedded data acquisition applications and is equipped with a variety of connectors and interfaces to easily adapt to the complex communication requirements of public transportation systems.
Moxa worked with software provider GHOST Labs to achieve comprehensive monitoring of public transport vehicles. GHOST Labs is responsible for correlating, coordinating, and monitoring all on-board system and computer data, and sending aggregated information to Transdev's AWS platform and the Public Transport Authority (TF) according to government requirements.
By integrating Moxa's industrial computers and the GHOST IOT platform, it is possible to securely and reliably collect, process, and analyze bus data information. Transdev can remotely monitor this fully functional on-board system and obtain valuable information from it, making smart decisions and thus improving service quality.

Cooperation results
Transforming commuting
Improving the passenger experience on public transport
By capturing vehicle and passenger events second by second, Transdev has significantly improved the public transportation experience. Real-time data has significantly improved the passenger experience, making buses a more attractive transportation option in Sweden than driving. After integrating real-time data collection and transmission technology , Transdev can provide passengers with more efficient and reliable services, greatly improving the quality of local public transportation.
"Transdev Sverige AB and Moxa have joined forces to significantly improve Stockholm's transportation by providing passengers with a seamless, convenient, and environmentally friendly experience. We hope that through this collaboration and the integration of our cutting-edge technologies, we can achieve cost savings, increase efficiency, and expand the scope of the transportation system. The future of mobility is brighter than ever."
